Solar panels vs solar cells?
2023-03-08
Solar cells are thin semiconductor wafers composed of two different layers of silicon (n-type silicon (blue) and p-type silicon (red)), which are specially treated or doped. Solar cells are made of the same semiconductor material (usually silicon) used in the microelectronics industry. For solar cells, thin semiconductor wafers are specially treated to create an electric field, positive on one side and negative on the other.
A common solar cell is configured as a large area pn junction made of silicon. Connect individual solar cells together to form a component (called a "solar module" or "PV module") to increase the current, while to further increase the current, connect the components into an array (called a solar "solar array" or "PV module"). Solar panels are connected in a variety of ways depending on the current or voltage requirements.
The lower layer of a solar cell is doped with trivalent elements such as phosphorus, and this layer is called a p-type or positive-type layer. The upper layer of a solar cell is doped with pentavalent elements such as boron and aluminum, producing excess electrons. This layer is called an n-type or negative-type layer. When light energy strikes a solar cell, electrons are shed from atoms in the semiconductor material. If electrical conductors are connected to the positive and negative electrodes to form a circuit, these electrons can be captured in the form of an electric current, an electric current. This electricity can then be used to power a load, such as a light bulb or a water pump. A typical four-inch silicon solar cell generates about a watt and a half of electricity in bright midday sunlight. Solar cells are the building blocks of solar panels.
A solar module is a device that converts sunlight directly into electrical energy. Some materials exhibit a property called the photoelectric effect, which is captured in the form of an electric current when photons that make them absorb light and release electrons. A photovoltaic module consists of multiple solar cells that are electrically connected to each other and mounted in a support structure or frame. The module is designed to supply power at a specific voltage (typically 12 V). The current generated is directly dependent on the amount of sunlight shining on the module. Photovoltaic modules have proven to be very durable and reliable. They typically have a lifespan of 25 years. While one component is usually sufficient to meet the power needs of our incubator system or basic solar home system, two or more components can be joined together to form an array. In general, "the larger the area of a component or array, the more power is generated".
Photovoltaic modules and arrays generate direct current (dc) electricity. They can be electrically arranged in series and parallel to generate any desired combination of voltage and current. Solar modules provide a charger for the battery through a solar controller, and inverters are used to convert direct current to alternating current for use in home appliances.
